Dolphins top Ottawa, Streator

PERU — The Illinois Valley YMCA Dolphins hosted a triangular meet with the Ottawa YMCA Dolphins and the Streator Stingrays Feb. 1. Once again, the IV Dolphins came out on top in first place with a combined score of 752 points. Ottawa took second with 386 points while the Stingrays hobbled into third place with 42 points.

Spring Valley’s Michelle Arrate, 13, took fourth-place honors in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:35.49, and again in the 100 yard backstroke (1:25.82). Arrate also took a fifth-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle (1:10.13), and swam the anchor position in the IV Dolphins’ win in the 200 medley (2:22.48).

Michael Arrate, 11, took top honors in the 200 freestyle (3.08.66) and placed fifth in the 100 yard freestyle at 1:26.45.

Nicholas Arrate, 9, took fourth place in the 200 freestyle (3:10.73), and third in the 50 yard butterfly at 51.05. He finished up the day in ninth place in the 50 yard backstroke (49.34).

Caden Brooks, 10, of Princeton had an incredible day, with two state qualifying times and one district. Brooks led the pack in the 200 yard individual medley (2:56.24) for his first state qualifier. His second came from a second-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle at 1:13.72. Brooks swam to a fourth-place finish in the 50 yard breaststroke (32.53) to qualify for districts. Brooks also qualified for state with his team in the 200 medley (2:25.83).

Ladd’s Jack Devert, 9, swam a district qualifying time in the 100 yard individual medley (1:38.54), placing fourth. Devert also placed seventh in the 50 yard freestyle (38.81) and sixth in the 100 yard freestyle (1:29.82).

Logan Griggs, 10, of Spring Valley swam to ninth place 50 yard freestyle at 40.92, in the 100 yard freestyle (1:39.68) and again in the 50 yard breaststroke (57.37). Griggs also swam leadoff in the IV Dolphins’ second place finish in the 200 freestyle medley.

Spring Valley’s Charleigh Holmes, 12, continued her domination in the pool, earning a first-place finish in each event: the 200 yard freestyle at 2:04.08; the 50 yard freestyle at 26.27 and the 100 yard butterfly event at 1:05.86. Holmes also swam the second leg in the IV Dolphins’ 200 medley which took first place at 1:07.34. All three of Holmes’ individual events were state qualifying times.

Gunnar Jauch, 10, of Spring Valley swam a perfect meet as well in four events which were all state qualifying times. Jauch swam a 1:07.00 in the 100 yard freestyle, and in the 50 yard freestyle in (29.91). He clocked a 34.06 in the 25 backstroke. Jauch also qualified for state with his teammates in the 200 medley (2:25.83).

Alexander Johll, 8, of Spring Valley earned a seventh-place finish twice during the meet, once in the 25 yard backstroke (30.06) and again in the 25 yard freestyle at 28.90. Johll also swam in the 100 yard freestyle medley with a third-place finish in 2:10.82.

Princeton’s Linnea Lee-Brown took a first-place finish in all four of her events. She started the day with a time of 2:31.91 in the 200 yard backstroke. Every other event she was in clocked a state qualifying time. The 50 yard freestyle went by in 26.01 and she completed the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:16.11. Lee-Brown then anchored the IVD 200 freestyle medley for a state-qualifying first place finish of 1:50.01.

Delaney Mallery, 9, of Princeton posted a time of 3:07.74 in the 200 yard freestyle which earned her the top spot. She took eighth in the 50 yard freestyle (42.21). She also swam a 55.47 in the 50 yard breaststroke to take home a seventh-place finish.

Nolan Mallery, 15, swam a 3:07.74 in the 200 yard individual medley for a second-place finish. He earned a fourth-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle (1:16.35) and third place in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:31.10). Mallery’s team took first place in the 200 yard medley (2:13.25).

Ladd’s Samuel Tieman, 8, swam the 25 yard freestyle event (23.66) for sixth place. He also took an eighth-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle (53.05) and finished with a fifth place finish in the 25 yard backstroke (32.36).

Zachary Tieman, 13, took third in the 50 yard freestyle (37.55). He followed up with a fifth-place finish at 1:27.93 in the 100 yard freestyle event. Zachary also placed fourth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:43.77).

The next meet for the Illinois Valley Dolphins will be at home versus Freeport, Ottawa and Kewanee YMCA swimming teams on Saturday.
