Panthers win final dual meet of the year

PERU — Hall/Putnam County went 2-0 in its final dual of the year at St. Bede Thursday, defeating the host Bruins 40-39 and Ottawa Marquette 66-6.

Hall/PC coach Jerry Kriewald said it was a good way to end the season before regionals.

St. Bede got a jump start against Hall/PC winning the first four matches. James Peacock pinned Mario Flores 3:14 at 132, followed by pins at 138 by Connor MacDavitt over Kurt Nabers 1:05, and 145 by Adam Hunter over R.J. Copeland at 2:36 and Andre Hurr 6-3 decision at 152 over Ben Garland.

Then the Panthers started to rally with Luke McCook pinning Garrett Barto 1:25 at 160, Cole Elliott defeating Jeff Barnes 8-4 at 170, James Hall (182) pinning Spencer Barnes (3:14) at 182, Marco Gutierrez winning by forfeit at 195 and Matt Briddick pinning Bendon Edens (:12) at 220.

Heavyweight Jon Barnes righted the Bruins’ ship by pinning Trevor Case at 1:14, and Carter Funfsin (106) and Jordon Elenski (113) won by forfeit as the Bruins held on for victory.

There were only five matches contested in the Hall/PC match vs. Marquette with nine decided by forfeit. All four winners on the mat for the Panthers came via pinfalls — James Hall at 182 (2:33), Gutierrez at 195 (0:36), Briddick at 220 (0:21) and heavyweight Case (1:02).

Likewise, the Bruins won all four contested matches vs. Marquete in a 72-6 victory. Peacocock won by a 1:33 pinfall at 132, Spencer Barnes recorded a 5:55 pinfall at 152, Brendon Edens won by a 1:52 pinfall at 220 and John Barnes posted a 1:57 pinfall at heavyweight.
