Area athletes compete in Winter Games

GALENA — Special Olympics Illinois athletes, coaches and volunteers from around the state gathered in the Galena area Feb. 4-6 for the annual Winter Games.

Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena was the site of cross-country skiing, alpine skiing and snowshoeing competition. Those in attendance included 375 athletes, 175 coaches, 150 family members and 300 volunteers.

Athletes competed in divisions based on their gender, age and comparable entry scores, giving each athlete a chance to succeed on a level playing field. Medals were awarded for the first 3 places and ribbons were awarded for 4th through 8th place.

For Princeton High School, Jennifer Tornow was first in the 50-meter snowshoe race. Brandon Endsley was first in the 100-meter and second in the 50-meter cross country races, Justin Smith was second in the 50- and 100-meter snowshoe races, Melissa Anderson was second in the 100 and 500-meter cross country races, Nathan Warren was third in the 400-meter snowshoe race and fourth in the 200-meter snowshoe race and Theresa McLachlan was sixth in the 100-meter cross country race.

Tracy Gibson of Tracy’s Boxer Club of Walnut won blue ribbons in both the 50- and 100-meter snowshoe races.
