Pat Hockings is the owner of Down Range Tactical located at 221 W. Dakota St. in Spring Valley. The business consists of an indoor shooting range and a classroom where people can take a wide variety of hunter safety classes. It also sells guns and ammunition.

SPRING VALLEY — Down Range Tactical in Spring Valley allows the public a place to shoot their weapons at an indoor shooting range.

Owner Pat Hockings, who also runs Mean Metal Guns in Spring Valley, opened Down Range Tactical the first part of November.

“We have been planning this since the first year the gun shop opened in downtown Spring Valley,” reported Hockings. “We wanted to put it in a building next door, but we decided to go with this place instead.”

This particular home was bought especially for this purpose. An empty garage was renovated for the classroom that can seat 20 people. The shooting range consists of 10 lanes, six rifle and four pistol, with active steel targets.

“We have people from all over come here to shoot, even out of state,” he added. “There is nowhere else in the area for the public to shoot. The public can walk in to use the range to shoot anytime if they have a FOID card.”

Hockings said Down Range Tactical offers the convenience of a classroom and shooting range in one location.

“We have 22 safety classes for kids, hunter safety classes. women’s only classes and basic pistol classes. We also offer private lessons,” he added. “We have five instructors for the concealed carry classes, four of which have a law enforcement background.”

The entire entry fee for children’s safety classes are donated by Hockings to Lighted Way. Guns and ammunition for these classes are supplied for the children.

“We have lots of classes. There is a huge interest in concealed carry classes right now, 16-hour classes or 8-hour classes. Veterans or law enforcement only need to take 8-hour classes.”

Guns, targets and ammunition can be bought or rented at Down Range Tactical. People can also bring their own guns, ammo or equipment, he added.

“We have group specials if companies have large number of people who want to take these classes,” he said. “We have them evenings, weekdays and weekend. We also have four- and eight-hour sessions.”

Down Range Tactical, located at 221 W. Dakota St. in Spring Valley, phone number is 815-663-GUNS (4867). More information can be found on the business’ website at www.dwnrangetactical.com or on its Facebook page.

The range is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
