PERU — The Illinois Valley YMCA Dolphins played host to three other teams in a meet with the Ottawa YMCA Dolphins, the Kewanee YMCA and the Freeport YMCA Bluefins on Feb 8. The IV Dolphins continued their winning ways coming out on top in first place with a combined score of 626 points.
Ottawa took second with 349 points while Kewanee came up in third place with 201 points. Freeport filled out the ranks with 79 points.
Several local swimmers contributed to the Dolphin win.
Caden Brooks, 10, of Princeton had another good day, with two state qualifying times and one district for the second week in a row. Brooks placed fourth in the 50 yard freestyle (32.26) for his first state qualifier. His second came from a second-place finish in the 50 yard backstroke (38.01). Brooks swam to a second-place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:41.04) to qualify for districts. Brooks also swam with his team in the 200 freestyle where the team placed third (2:34.62). Spring Valley's Isabelle Collins, 11, came in fifth in the girls 100 freestyle.
Ladd's Jack Devert, 9, swam a district qualifying time in the 50 yard backstroke (44.30). Devert also placed ninth in the 50 yard butterfly (50.63) and sixth in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:29.82. Devert also swam with his team in the 200 freestyle where the team placed third (2:34.62).
Logan Griggs, 10, of Spring Valley came up short in his individual events, placing in the top ten only in the boys 200 freestyle medley (2:34.62).
Spring Valley's Charleigh Holmes, 12, had a perfect day with all four of her events ending with first place finishes and state qualifying times. She dominated in the 200 yard individual medley (2:25.32), the 100 yard butterfly (1:06.67) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:20.51). Holmes also swam the final leg in the
IV Dolphins' 200 freestyle which also took first place and a state qualifying time (1:56.69).
Gunnar Jauch, 10, of Spring Valley also swam a perfect meet as well in four events which were all state qualifying times and first place finishes. Jauch swam in the 200 yard individual medley (2:43.74), the 100 yard freestyle (1:08.08), the 50 breaststroke (41.64). Jauch also qualified for state with his teammates in a first place finish in the 200 freestyle medley (1:56.69).
Alexander Johll, 8, of Spring Valley swam in the 100 yard freestyle medley for a fourth place finish (1:59.01).
Princeton's Linnea Lee-Brown had a banner day with all four of her events ending in state qualifying times. She placed second (2:26.61) in the 200 yard individual medley, first in the 100 yard freestyle (58.63) and first in the 100 yard backstroke (1.09.30). Lee-Brown then anchored the IVD 200 freestyle medley for a state-qualifying first place finish (1:51.52).
Delaney Mallery, 9, of Princeton swam for a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (3:11.56) and took ninth in the 100 yard freestyle at a time of (1:34.24).
Brother Nolan Mallery, 15, threw some points on the board with a second place run (3:12.24) in the 200 yard individual medley and a third-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle (1:15.42). Mallery also swam to third place in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:29.69). Mallery's team took first-place in the 200 yard medley (2:15.83).
Ladd's Samuel Tieman, 8, took 10th in the 25 yard freestyle event (24.80) and eighth-place in the 50 yard freestyle (54.28).
Zachary Tieman, 13, took seventh in the 50 yard freestyle (37.19) and again in the 100 yard freestyle event (1:29.27).
The next meet for the Illinois Valley Dolphins will be at home versus Dixon on Feb. 15.
