From the editor’s desk

We’re just a few days away from turning the calendar page to March, and I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping it comes in like a lamb, rather than a lion. It’s difficult to believe two months of 2014 are already gone.

I like March — always have. Perhaps it’s the warmer weather I yearn for, but actually, I think it’s the thing the warm weather brings that has me anxiously waiting its arrival — baby farm animals, flowers poking their heads through the dirt, the birds singing from their tiny feathered souls — I mean, what’s not to like? The time change on March 9 is also a plus!

We’re planning a fun-filled special page for St. Patrick’s Day in the BCR. Right now, we are looking for any restaurant in the Illinois Valley that is serving the famed corned beef and cabbage. If you are a restaurant owner or if you know one, give BCR Copy Editor Sarah Maxwell a call at 815-875-4461, ext. 228, or email her at smaxwell@bcrnews.com. We’d love to include your restaurant’s listing on our page. Erin go bragh! (OK, I’m not Irish, but that little phrase, “Erin go bragh,” translates to “Ireland forever,” so it seemed appropriate!)

I’ve heard lots of wonderful comments about last week’s special section, “Hometown Heroes.” I’m glad so many of you liked it. If you know of a “Hometown Hero” you’d like to see us honor next year, make a mental note of it. We’ll be asking for your help again in 2015. Thanks again for your kind comments.

I’ve had a lot of questions about our next edition of Illinois Valley Living. We are having a lot of fun working on our Spring 2014 edition, which is set to be out later in March. We have some wonderful stories scheduled for this edition, and I know you will enjoy reading about the people, places and things in the Illinois Valley. Thanks so much to so many of you, who have called and emailed me with story suggestions. It is much appreciated.

Also, our NorthCentral Illinois AgMag will be mailed in a few days. This magazine is becoming increasingly popular with the agriculture community and covers six counties — Bureau, Marshall, Putnam, LaSalle, Stark and Henry counties. Again, you’ll see the faces of local folks on the pages of this magazine, which is published three times a year.

Just a reminder: I sometimes feel like I’m beating a dead horse on this one, so to speak, but it’s a point worth mentioning again. Please know I will be happy to listen to any comment, complaint, suggestion, etc., but I will only do so if you can speak with me in an appropriate manner. Yes, I understand your passion, and yes, I understand circumstances that might make you upset. However, I will not listen to anyone shout, swear and make emotional accusations about this newspaper, the staff or myself because of one’s anger.

Want to call and speak with me adult to adult? That’s great. I’ll give you as much time as you need, and I’ll listen to your problem. Want to call and shout and curse and not give me the respect in return that I just gave you? I can’t, and I won’t do it. Call me back when we can have an adult conversation/discussion.

If your birthday is Feb. 29, you’ve got a couple of years before you get to blow out the candles again. The next Leap Year is in 2016! But if I were you, I’d go ahead and celebrate anyway. Bring on the birthdays! I’ll take every one I can get!

Next week’s calendar: Fat Tuesday is March 4, and Ash Wednesday, which kicks off the Lenten season, is March 5. Don’t forget to order your paczkis from the Spring Valley Bakery for Fat Tuesday. They have a ton of flavors, and you won’t be disappointed!

Have a great week. Be gentle with each other and yourself. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
