Seneca holds off Storm rally; Annawan advances to State finals

Princeton 2A boys regional: Bureau Valley rallied from 32-13 halftime deficit to tie game at 44 only to have a five-point play by Seneca seal a 59-54 in Princeton regional finals at Prouty Gym Friday.

Seneca hit a 3-point shot as a foul was called away from the play. Two free throws were made on top of the three-point shot to boost the Irish to a 49-44.

Parker Neuhalfen had 20 points as the high scorer for the Storm (20-12). Ryan Young (12) and Josh Mead (11) combined for 23 more.

Irish (24-5) advances to the Bureau Valley Sectional to face Three Rivers North champ Sterling Newman at  p.m. Wednesday. The secitonal tips off Tuesday at the Storm Cellar.

1A State Girls Tournament: No. 1 ranked Annawan blew into Saturday's State championship game, defeating Lanark Eastland 71-45 in Firday's semifinals

The Bravettes vaunted 2-2-1 press smothered Eastland like a venus fly trap, forcing a whopping 47 turnovers on the night. It was a pressure Eastland could simply never recover from or have an answer.

"Our defense was phenomenal. I dont think we've every played that well before," AHS senior Celina VanHyfte said.

Offensively, Annawan was led by three-time All-Stater Celina VanHyfte, who scored 18 points. Cierra Davis added 15 points and Morgan VanHyfte had 13.

The Bravettes (29-4) will face Carrolton at 2 p.m. Saturday at Redbird Arena. Carrollton edged Mowequa Central A&M by two.

Annawan spent Friday evening back at Redbird Arena, watching neighbor Prophetstown in the 2A semifinals. They are separated by only 20 miles along Rite 78. Both brought large crowds to Normal with them.

Marquette 1A Regional: Putnam County used a 23-2 run in the second half to defeat Henry-Senachwine 54-40 in Friday's regional championship at Marseilles.

The Panthers (22-8) will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Colfax Ridgeview Sectional.

In other area regionals, No. 1 ranked and undefeated Rockridge (26-0) beat Kewanee for the third time the season, taking the Sherrard Regional crown 75-67 Friday night. The Rockets will face Monmouth-Roseville in Stanford Olympia Sectional Wednesday.
