DEKALB — The Illinois Valley Dolphins competed in the Northwest Junior District and District Championship swimming meet hosted by the Kishwaukee YMCA on March 8 and 9. The Dolphins placed fourth out of 10 teams at the event.
The meet was conducted in two divisions: the district section where all swimmers participating either swam a district-qualifying time during the season if they were age 12 and under; or were age 13 and over; and for age 12 and under swimmers that did not swim a district-qualifying time otherwise referred to as the Junior Division.
Local swimmers that led the Dolphins included Charleigh Holmes, 12, of Spring Valley who swam six events with state-qualifying times in each. She took two first-place finishes; in the 200 yard freestyle event (2:06.47) and in the 50 yard backstroke (30.02). Holmes earned three second-place finishes; in the 50 yard freestyle (25.85); the 50 yard butterfly (28.39) and the 100 yard freestyle (55.59). Holmes earned a third-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (1:05.90).
Swimmers who qualified will be swimming at the 2014 Illinois State YMCA Championships on March 21-23 at the Rec Plex in Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
