Whitetails Unlimited on tap Friday

About a week ago I wrote about a nice banquet and this week I’m shifting over to another great one - Whitetails Unlimited. Their banquet will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at Wise Guys.

The Illinois Valley Chapter is known for its great meal, raffles and the Gordon Shipp Memorial Scholarship. This is a $500 scholarship given to a youth from the Illinois Valley who meets the criteria set up by the club. The meat and fish buffet will start at 7 p.m. Please support this fine group.

Gosh, things are happening in Bureau County.  Two weeks after the Whitetail’s banquet will be two more events. I mentioned before the Illinois Inland Trout Season will open up April 5 at the Hennepin Canal. The starting time will be 6 a.m. Adult fishermen will need a current Illinois license plus an inland trout stamp. Active service personnel and youth 15 and under do not need a license. Please note, they do not sell either on location.

Each fisherman is allowed a limit of five trout per day. This is a great opportunity to pick up your limit of rainbows without travelling very far.

The same day as trout season is the Bureau Valley Ducks Unlimited fourth annual Gun Bash. This popular event will be held a the Met starting at 5:30 p.m.

This is a little different format than other banquets. Interested participants can purchase a ticket for $100 which is good for a beverage, a meal and a ticket that includes a one in 10 chance of winning a gun. This year, each winner gets to choose the gun of their choice from 22 different firearms.

For more information or tickets contact  Erik Ellberg at 815-876-6659, Ben Dzurisin at 815-866-4636 or Eric Speakes at 815-289-6150.

I figure on April 5, you can go trout fishing, take your limit home, and then head out and bag a couple of coyotes. Then come home and go to the DU Gun bash. Keep busy, ya know.

• Brennan Caputo, natural resources coordinator for the IDNR, will discus why Asian carp is such a problem and what the IDNR is doing to control their movement and population in Wednesday’s Better Fishing Association meeting. The program will start at 7:30 p.m. at the LaSalle VFW, 24th and Donauhe. For more information, call Tom Wall at 815-223-3671.

• Finally, coming up on March 29-30 will be the 28th year Spring Valley has hosted the MWC Tournament. The national sponsor is Cabela’s and the local sponsor is the Spring Valley Walleye Club. First place will be $20,000.

There is a five fish limit and they can use artificial bait only. Each day will consist of two flights. First flight will leave at 8 a.m. and return by 4 p.m. The second half of the competitors will leave at 8:30 a.m. and return by 5 p.m. On Sunday, the process is reversed.

Spectators should park at Hall High School and take the shuttle to Barto Landing. Come and watch the weigh-in on Sunday.
