2014 Hall softball preview
Experienced trio leads Lady Devils
SPRING VALLEY — The 2014 Hall softball team will bank on six returning starters, including a trio of four-year varsity players, to lead it into the Three Rivers Conference for the first time this spring.
Hall coach Pete Kasperski said seniors Becca Herrmann, Brenna Falletti and Deidra Whightsil will be counted on heavily for their leadership and play on the field as they return for their fourth season with the big club.
Becca Herrmann will return behind the plate to catch, Faletti anchors the infield at shortstop with Deidra Whightsil patrolling center field. Other familiar faces in the Hall lineup include juniors Ellie Herrmann, who makes the move across the infield from third to second, Abbey Azarski, who will play first or third, and Kylie Whightsil, who will play first.
Kasperski looks for sophomore Adrianna Pikula to be the ace of the pitching staff and “shoulder the load,” backed by classmate Heidi Nielsen and Kylie Whightsil.
Juniors Jailey Goetz and Adriana Hawton will be in the mix for the outfield and first base with freshmen pitcher Rene Barroso on standby.
“We hope to improve on last year’s record,” Kasperski said. “We’ll be in a new conference so it will be interesting to see new teams, especially teams on the other side (of the Three Rivers) and getting teams from the Quad Cities. Before we’ve played teams in the Tri-County Conference and some of the smaller schools.”
The Lady Devils await their next scheduled game Thursday at Princeton in the Three Rivers South play. The first two attempts to play ball have been canceled due to inclement weather.
“We need to get outside and get some games in,” Kasperski said.
Hall is scheduled to make its home opener Saturday vs. Amboy for a 10 a.m. doubleheader.
