Spring officially arrived last Thursday, and though our recent cold weather has us wondering, I’ve seen quite a few signs of spring popping up around the county. Last week, I saw several baby calves sprinkled on the hillside during one of my travels. I can also see some flowers in my yard just beginning to pop through the dirt. One thing about this past winter, it sure makes us appreciate the spring. Enjoy!

Bragging a bit on the folks at the Bureau County Republican, we were pleased last week to deliver more than $2,500 to the five food pantries in Bureau County, The money came from our staff during the past several months for different fundraisers we held internally. The money we raised was also coupled with a donation from an anonymous donor. We were so proud to be able to donate the money, which we split equally between the five food pantries. We’ve got a great group of benevolent folks at the BCR. Just wanted you to know ...

This Thursday, I’ll be participating in the annual Ladies Night Out event at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manlius. It’s a fun time, and I hope you’ll be able to come out and enjoy. I’ll be signing my book, “Grandma’s Cookie Jar.” There will also be several other folks, selling their creations, offering samples, etc., including the BCR’s own Greg Wallace — just wait until you see what he’s creating! Aside from all the vendors, Chef Monika Sudakov of the Chestnut Street Inn of Sheffield will give demonstations, and you won’t want to miss the complimentary chocolate fountain and the mashed potato bar. There will be plenty of raffles, door prizes, a silent auction, and you can have a chance to win a 46-inch LED HD TV. Wyaton Hills will be there to help shuttle event-goers from their vehicles to the door. Come on out and see me. It will be a ton of fun!

Customer Service Kudos: Do you know an individual or a business who delivers great customer service. If so, send me an email telling me about your experience, and I’ll be happy to include it in this column. You can reach me at tsimon@bcrnews.com. Following are the Kudos I received recently:

• Ray said, “My Kudos go to the Fearless Foursome at the Bureau County Senior Center. They are doing income taxes under the auspices of AARP every Tuesday and Friday. The Fearless Foursome are Jim Argo, Bob Byrne, John Huff and Bob Krenz. Nice going!”

• Jean said, “I’d like to compliment the ladies at Brandy’s (Hallmark of Princeton). They are always so helpful, and they even help me carry my packages to my car. You just don’t see that kind of service anymore.”

• Tony said, “When it comes to customer service, you don’t get much better than Spring Valley Bar and Grill. They make you feel like you’re the most important person who ever came through the door. Sure makes me want to go back again.”

There are so many scams going on these days that it’s frightening. The newest one is the IRS scam — check out our front page story. Remember: THE IRS WILL NEVER CALL YOU AT HOME! So if you receive a call from the IRS, I’m about 99.9 percent sure it is a scam call.

Every once in a while I will receive a telephone call from someone (usually a Mom) who is upset because we published a police beat about a family member’s arrest or sentencing. Please know we publish everyone’s information, and for us not to publish a specific person’s arrest/sentencing would compromise our credibility and integrity. We are the messenger.

Thanks for the postcard we received of the Eiffel Tower from the Hall High School French classes. Have the time of your life!

Have a great week. Please be gentle with others and yourself, and remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
