Evelyn Smoode

SPRING VALLEY — Evelyn H. Smoode, 74, of Spring Valley passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, at her home after a battle with cancer.

Born July 21, 1939, in Henry to Otto and Florence (Bogner) Louis, she married Samuel Smoode April 20, 1963, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Henry. He preceded her in death in 1995.

She was a graduate of Henry-Senachwine High School and from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Bloomington in 1960. She worked as a registered nurse and nursing supervisor at St. Margaret’s Hospital from March 1963 until her retirement in April 2006. After retiring, she worked for Illinois Valley Hospice until April 2008.

Surviving are three daughters, JoAnn Pozzi of Spring Valley, Silvia Smoode of Granville and Jane (Jim) Hughes of Metamora; two sons, Joe (Jennifer) Smoode and Keith (Jill) Smoode, both of Granville; nine grandchildren, Alyssa Holmes, Alley Carlson, Samantha and Dominic Smoode, Hunter and Ava Hughes, Tori Smoode, Kendell Owens and Gianna Pozzi; a brother, Norbert Louis of Putnam; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Corpus of Peru; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Cecelia Hartwig; and a son-in-law, Rob Pozzi.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Arlington with the Rev. Patrick Fixsen officiating. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, as well as from 10:30 a.m. until the time of funeral services Monday in the church.
