LAMOILLE — First year LaMoille/Ohio Lady Lion coach Angie Augspols had to wait a few weeks into the season to get her first win as a head coach, but it was well worth the wait as her Lady Lions topped the Paw Paw Bulldogs 7-6 on first baseman Amanda Chasteen’s walk-off single Tuesday in LaMoille.

“Words can’t describe how we’re feeling right now,” Augspols said. “These girls battled every single inning it wasn’t just score once and we held the lead. We had to score throughout the game, and we had to fight for it every single inning and battle throughout the game to get the W.”

After recording the first two outs in the top of the seventh inning, starting pitcher Ragan Forbes got into a jam as she gave free passes to the next four hitters, walking three and hitting one to force in the game tying run to set up some late inning heroics.

The heart of the Lady Lions’ batting order stepped to the challenge as third baseman Myrah Graham ripped a double down the left field line. Catcher Toni Lawrence followed with hard hit single down the left field line, advancing Graham to third.

Chasteen stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and sent another line drive down the left field line, easily allowing Graham to score the game-winning run from third.

“She had kind of a fluke accident yesterday and injured her thumb, but for her to come out being in pain and to come up big for us with that hit was just huge,” Augspols said, “I was so proud of her.”

While not overpowering, the battery of Forbes and Lawrence proved efficient as they complemented each other nicely making heads up plays and forcing hitters into weak fly balls and squib shots that didn’t make it out of the infield.

“Ragan pitched against the same team yesterday and saw the same hitters and that’s hard to do with just seeing them and coming back today and fighting through that. But she remained positive and our catcher, Toni, really kept her in the game every single pitch,” Augspols said.

Lawrence came up big as she caught two base runners stealing second base while Forbes picked off a runner trying to advance to third.

Forbes collected the complete game win while Chasteen led the Lady Lions offense going 3-4 with three RBIs.

“It’s awesome,” Augspols said. “I knew I would get my first win as a coach this season. This win is so special because it is my first as a head coach so getting this win is amazing, and I will always remember it because it is my first.”

Notes: A rainout Monday night at Paw Paw forced the postponement of the final 2 and 1/3 innings of play between the two teams and was made up prior to Tuesday’s game. Paw Paw was victorious 11-3. Chasteen, who was 3-3 during the split game, led the LaMoille offense.
