Mendota captures PTI

PRINCETON — Mendota finished first in two positions and placed second in the other two to capture Saturday’s Princeton Tennis Invitational.

The Trojans scored 18 points to edge LaSalle-Peru (17). They were followed by Streator (11), Princeton (9) and St. Bede (5).

Mendota’s Cody Phalen went 4-0 to take first at No. 1 singles. The Trojans took first at No. 1 doubles with James Carroll and Mark Prescott.

Both of Princeton’s doubles teams placed third. Lucas Bauer moved up to No. 1 doubles to team up with Zach Hicks, whose regular partner Tyler Lorenzen, took ill. They finished 2-2, defeating St. Bede’s Jack Kunkel and Joe Kim (6-1, 6-0) and Streator (6-4, 6-4).

At No. 2 doubles, Brady Frank and Ian Nichols went 2-2 with twins over Streator (6-2,7-5) and St. Bede (6-1, 6-1).

In singles play, both Nichols (No. 1) and Bauer (No. 2) won one match to place fourth.
