The Bureau County Home and Community Education (HCE) met on April 29 for its annual meeting and election of officers for the coming year.
Officers for the 2014-15 year are: Mary Ann Johnson, president; Ramona Wedding, first vice president; Dorothy Johnson, second vice president; Pat Law, secretary; Marilyn Burkman, treasurer; Marge Zimmerman and Joann Johnson, community outreach; Pat Anson, cultural enrichment; Vivienne Lutes, public relations; Marlene Klingenberg, international; and June Lapinski, family living.
HCE works with the University of Illinois Extension Service in providing workshops, programs and information on many of the issues facing society today. HCE’s greatest effort is support of the 4-H program in Bureau County. HCE engages in many other outreach programs such as an annual collection of school supplies to supplement the elementary school classrooms in the middle of the school year when supplies run low. HCE’s money-making activities to support all of these projects are the food stand at the 4-H Fair in July, the pie-baking contest at the Homestead Festival in September and the giant cookie-walk in December.
HCE has been active for close to 100 years, having organized officially in 1922, Bureau is the 18th county in the state to do so.
