Bureau Valley South sixth-grader Trent DeVenney (center) was one of the 2015 Coal Calendar Art and Essay contest winners. The contest gives fifth- to eighth-grade students the opportunity to learn about the coal mining industry. The visual and written illustrations demonstrate the students’ understanding of how coal is formed, mine and transported. He wrote about George Eddy, one of the survivors of the Cherry Mine disaster.
