GRANVILLE – The Putnam County Lady Panthers have taken one step toward their eventual goal with a sectional semifinal 4-2 win over Princeville Thursday.
Pitcher Shelby Yepsen held the opposition to just seven hits in her complete game effort, with two strikeouts and two walks in the contest.
The Lady Panthers, now 22-7 will take on the 19-8 Serena Lady Huskers at 11 a.m. Saturday in Granville for the IHSA Sectional championship.
Spotting Princeville a run in the first, the Lady Panthers came back in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Annie Miller single to left field and scored on a triple by Monica Monroe. Vanesasa Boss laid down a squeeze bunt to score Monroe for a 2-1 lead.
The contest was 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Yepsen gave up her second walk of the game. The runner was sacrificed to second and stole third base. In a bloop single just over Taylor Pettit’s head at second base, the Princeville runner scored to tie the game at 2-2.
After one out in the sixth inning, Ciera Keller singled and Jackie Ossola pinch ran for her. Allison Voss hit a hard grounder that was bobbled and she was safe at first. Stephanie Wilson dropped a bunt down and was safe to load the bases. Pettit then hit a bullet to short, which was bobbled for the second error of the inning and Ossola score from third base.
PC then put an insurance run together in the top of the seventh inning when Carly Gonet singled to left. Venessa Voss then slammed a triple to left field, which scored Gonet and gave the final score of 4-2 in the game.
Miller was three for four in the contest, scoring a run. Monica Monroe hit two for three with a triple, walk and RBI. Wilson was two for four with a stolen base. Venessa Voss had one hit, a triple, with two RBI.
