Harry Hockings

SPRING VALLEY — Harry Patrick Hockings, 72, of Spring Valley died at 3:15 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2014, at his home following a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 19, 1941, in Peru to Harry T. and LaVerne Frizol Hockings. He married Jana Strattan on Aug. 14, 1979, in Princeton.

He was appointed an Illinois State Trooper in 1964 and assigned to the toll road in the Chicago area. He was honored by state Rep. Richard Mautino for playing a vital role in solving a homicide in LaSalle County in 1984. He retired from District 17 in 1991.

He was a member of the Peoria Skeet and Trap Club, lifetime member of National Rifle Association, Illinois State Rifle Association and America Trapshooting Association. His interests included trapshooting, bench rest shooting and fishing. He graduated from Hall High School in 1960, Illinois Valley Community College and Lewis University. He served in the U.S. Navy with the Construction Battalion MCB Seven from 1960 to 1962.

Survivors are his wife, Jana of Spring Valley; a son, Patrick Hockings of Spring Valley; a daughter, Trisha Hockings; two grandsons, Jacob and Joshua Hockings of Spring Valley; his constant companion, “Bo”; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robin Hockings.

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, at The Nativity of Our Lord Church (510 Mautino Drive location) in Spring Valley with the Rev. Robert Spilman officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Spring Valley at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lighted Way, 941 Sixth St., LaSalle, IL 61301.
