Stanmar Scholarship winner announced

SPRING VALLEY — Samantha George of LaSalle has been named the recipient of this year’s $1,000 Dr. Margaret Stanmar Scholarship, chosen by the St. Margaret’s Foundation Scholarship Committee. She will attend Bradley University in Peoria to study the medical laboratory sciences and work toward medical school, with an ultimate goal of becoming a pathologist.

Samantha is a 2014 graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School, LaSalle. A high scholarship legion student at LaSalle-Peru, she was an active member of the softball, basketball and volleyball teams, which earned her a spot on the All-Conference Honorable Mention All-Academic Team in 2013. At L-P, she was also involved with Debate Club, Key Club, Link Crew and Operation Promise. Outside of school, she has been involved in travel softball, been a St. Margaret’s volunteer, a volunteer Little League baseball coach and a grade school basketball volunteer coach, while also holding a part-time job and working toward her CNA license.

Samantha is the daughter of Chuck and Michele George of LaSalle. She has two younger siblings.

Dr. Margaret Stanmar graduated as an MD from the Chicago Medical School in Chicago in 1943. She was one of four other females in her class to earn a medical degree at that time. She opened her practice in LaSalle and practiced in the field of OB/general practice. A longtime physician in the Illinois Valley area, Dr. Stanmar joined the St. Margaret’s staff in late 1975 and continued to practice in LaSalle and on staff at St. Margaret’s until her passing on Aug. 9, 1997.
