District 20 captures Big League State title

District 20 came up big in Saturday’s Big League State Tournament finals in Oglesby.

District 20 fell 6-1 in the first title game, but came back to top District 15 6-5 in the second to take the championship.

With the state crown in tow, District 20 will enter into regional play at 4 p.m. Wednesday against host Grand Rapids, Mich.

District 20 Little League Baseball Tournament

AT OTTAWA: Peru downed Streator 11-10 Monday to claim the 11-12 district championship. Peru advances to sectional play in Rochelle.

District 20 Minor League Softball Tournament

At Mendota: Spring Valley defeated Oglesby 10-6 Saturday, but was was knocked out of the 9-10 tournament with a 7-4 loss to Mendota. Peru and Mendota were to meet in Monday’s finals.

District 20 Junior League Softball Tournament

At Peru: LaSalle topped Peru 15-4 to capture Sunday’s district championship. Since there is no sectional, Peru will be going to South Holland for state.

Spring Valley was eliminated Saturday with a 12-6 loss to Peru.

At Walnut: Three of the top four seeds played their way into Monday’s semifinals with wins Sunday. No. 3 LaMoille had to wait until Monday, their late game Sunday rained out vs. No. 6 BVN Thunder.

Top seed Wyanet downed Sheffield 15-4 while No. 4 BVN Lightning defeated No. 12 Annawan II. Wyanet and the Lightning were to meet in Monday’s late game.

No. 2 Princeton Cardinals topped Tampico 14-4 in four innings just as the rain came down. Libby Boyles and Taylor Quiram (including a double) had two RBI hits for the Cardinals while winning pitcher Brynn Hieronymus had a RBI double and Katie Fields a RBI single.

In other Sunday action, the Cubs defeated the Red Sox 12-11 and the A’s won by forfeit over the Pirates.

On Saturday, Sheffield defeated the Cubs 12-11, the Lightning defeated the Red Sox, Annawan II defeated the A’s 17-16 and the Thunder topped the Pirates.

At Annawan: Saturday’s action included No. 2 Sheffield defeating No. 7 Annawan 10-5, No. 6 Princeton Red Sox defeating No. 3 Wyanet 8-2 and No. 4 Princeton White Sox defeating No. 5 Princeton Tigers 12-9.
