A 5.6 mile stretch of the Hennepin Canal bike path has been closed from Lock 3 to Bridge 4. Bureau Creek and the heavy rains have done a lot of erosion damage to the pathway. While some of the repair work can be handled by the staff, other work will need to be bid out. Hennepin Canal Parkway Site Superintendent Dave Hahne has asked people to avoid the area.

TISKILWA — Erosion continues along a section of the Hennepin Canal bike path near Tiskilwa, and people are asked to stay off that area.

Hennepin Canal Parkway Site Superintendent Dave Hahne said there is a 5.6 mile stretch of the bike path that has been marked closed from Lock 3 to Bridge 4. Bureau Creek and the heavy rains have done a lot of erosion damage to the pathway, starting this spring. The way the creek is running right now, the erosion is continuing, he said.

Some of the smaller sections of damage can be handled by his staff, but they haven’t yet gotten to that work, Hahne said. However, plans will have to be drawn up on the more heavily damaged area, and that work will have to be bid out, he said.

That 5.6 mile stretch of the Hennepin Canal bike path will be marked closed indefinitely for the safety of the public, Hahne said. Again, he prefers that everyone stay out of that area, though he realizes not everyone will.
