WALNUT — The 50th consecutive championship game of the Western Bureau Valley Little League was a memorable one with Manlius defeating top seed Sheffield-Buda 9-7.
The championship capped a 14-game win streak for the camo-clad Manlius team after dropping their first two games of the season. One of the losses was to Sheffield-Buda, which they avenged Sunday.
“It was a great game,” Manlius coach Jim Nugent said. “My kids when we get down they never give up. They’re always looking for the next opportunity to score some runs. We had a pretty complete team, hitting, pitching and fielding.”
Manlius plated five runs in the top of the first inning, but didn’t have long to celebrate. In the bottom of the inning, Sheffield-Buda’s Trent DeVenney blasted a three-run homer over the fence.
Sheffield-Buda came back with three more in the second to take a 6-5 lead. Manlius scored two in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead and two more in the top of the sixth to go up 9-7.
In the bottom of the sixth, Sheffield-Buda brought the tying run to the plate, but Manlius’ Wyatt Davis struck out the last batter to end the game. Davis pitched three innings in relief, striking out seven, for the win.
Mac Nugent led Manlius with three hits and four RBIs. Cael Davis had two hits and Jonah Johnson (double), Wyatt Davis (double), Logan Hardy, Devan Batten, Colton Bland and Vander Glaski each added one hit.
DeVenney, who pitched a complete game in defeat, led Sheffield-Buda with two hits, including the homer, with four RBIs. Carter Salisbury added two hits, including a double.
Manlius reached the finals by defeating the Princeton Cubs and LaMoille. Sheffield-Buda’s road to the finals included wins over the Princeton Yankees and Walnut.
Walnut beat LaMoille 11-5 for third place. The Princeton Cubs defeated the Princeton Yankees for the consolation championship.
