Peacock, Murfin back on top

PRINCETON — Rick Peacock and Mike Murfin made the most of second chances in Saturday’s Tiger Tennis Classic.

Peacock (Princeton) and Murfin (Pekin) teamed up to capture the men’s 40 and over championship in doubles play, defeating the duo of Lee Miller of Tiskilwa and Jeff Trobaugh of Sheffield 6-5, 7-6. A year ago Miller and Trobaugh defeated Peacock and Murfin for the championship.

Saturday’s tournament play brought out 43 pairs of doubles teams with singles tournament on deck this weekend.

“We had good matches all day,” tournament director Connie Lind said.

Cousins Jake Lipka of Peru and Trent Lipka of LaSalle defeated Princeton’s Eric Bickett and Chad Hermeyer 6-3, 6-1 in the men’s open finals.

On the women’s side, Jullie Milota of Tonica and Christy Savellano of Oglesby teamed up to defeat Maria Cavanaugh and Bailey Bradish of Ottawa 6-3, 6-1.

Milota doubled her fun by teaming up with Anthony Condie of Peru to take the mixed doubles title also. They defeated Trent Lipka and April Kutz 6-3, 5-7, 11-9. Lee Miller and Jean Hayes topped Katie Wellner and Matt Rebholz 10-3 for consolation.

In the girls 16 and under, Geneseo’s Paige Gramling and Ally Klein defeated Ottawa’s Gertie Barron and Reagan O’Fallan 7-5, 6-3.

The boys 16 and under title went to Matthew Greer and Andray Golden of East Moline.
