Hometown: Center Point, Iowa.
Years in boat racing: 25.
Who/what got you started in racing?: My grandfather, Dewey Payn. Growing up around it, I always wanted to do it. It was never forced upon me or nothing. I’m a third generation racer, and my daughter, Brianna, who won the K Pro last year, is a fourth generation.
Career highlights: Winning the 350 Runabout in 2010 with Mike Krier’s motor. He was sitting in the hospital because he got hurt in the 250 Runabout the day before and his motor was a little bit stronger than mine. As we were sitting in the hospital, Mike asked me if I would run his motor. It was kind of a heartfelt moment. I was proud, but worried about your buddy. But he wants his stuff still out on the water and then we won the championship, so that was icing on the cake.
Best things about racing in DePue: The town and the people who live here. Kind of a funny deal, I just walked up to the Giants Den for breakfast, got hollered at by about three people, got mooned at once. We’re all friends. I’ve been coming here for so long, half the town knows me.”
Classes racing this weekend: 500 Runabout, 350 Runabout and maybe the 250 and 700.
