‘When life throws you a curve ball ...’

I have always been a firm believer that there are many more good people in this world than bad people. This last weekend my belief was confirmed. The Western Bureau Valley Conference B Girl’s Softball Tournament was held in LaMoille. My oldest daughter, Erin, coaches the Tampico B Girl’s Team. This group of girls is amazing on and off the field. I have watched them grow and develop as great softball players.

On the previous Monday, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Even though the Tampico team wears bright orange shirts, they all wore pink socks in my honor. Their motto for the tournament was “Win for Anita!” It brought tears to my eyes. One of the umpires, Keith Dickinson from Princeton, also wore a pink umpire shirt during every game the Tampico team played. I felt honored. Thanks girls and Keith!

Sunday play began at 1 p.m. LaMoille vs. Walnut. I looked out on the field and some of the LaMoille players also had pink socks. More tears.

After the game, the LaMoille girls approached me with a bouquet of flowers and a card signed not just by the players but many of their parents and other community members. This gesture of kindness touched me deeply. Tears flowed. Complete strangers caring that much. The world is full of compassionate caring people. This was above and beyond. Thanks LaMoille … I will never forget this act of kindness.

“When life throws you a curve ball, hit it out of the park! That’s my plan!”
