St. Matthew’s to play UMC Thursday

PRINCETON — Bunker Hill held off United Methodist Church 7-6 Tuesday in the 2014 Princeton Church League Fastpitch Tournament held at Westside Park.

After UMC’s Dylan Olson hit a homer in the top of the first inning, Bunker Hill responded by scoring five in the bottom of the first.

Bunker Hill added runs in the third and sixth innings, while UMC scored two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to fall one run short in the game. Two runners were stranded by UMC at second and third when the final out was recorded by Bunker Hill.

Adam Gutshall went the distance for Bunker Hill as the winning pitcher, while Rex Lasson absorbed the loss.

In the first game of the night, St. Matthew’s overwhelmed Bureau Township 18-3 in five innings. Brad Snethen was the winning pitcher, while Jeremy House took the loss.

St. Matthew’s and United Methodist Church will play at 7 p.m. Thursday in the losers’ bracket. The winner of Thursday’s game will play Bunker Hill in the championship game of the double-elimination tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday.

If St. Matthew’s or UMC beats Bunker Hill in the first game Saturday, a second game will be played immediately afterwards to crown the season-ending tournament champion.
