Logan/Malden wins season opener

The Logan/Malden junior high softball program is underway with one doubleheader in the books.

There are 24 girls on the team, including two from Malden. The team has a 12-game schedule featuring six doubleheaders. Logan/Malden squad is splitting its home games at Malden and PHS’ Lil Siberia Field.

Coach Kevin Bauer said the team spent the first two weeks of practice working on the fundamentals for two hours, with many girls staying after practice for extra hitting or defensive help.

“The girls have worked extremely hard and have made great improvements in a short amount of time,” Bauer said. “Hitting-wise we started with building new batting stances for a lot of the girls, teaching them proper hitting techniques. It has been a big change for a lot of the girls, but they really hit well during our first two games this past weekend.”

Team members include eighth-graders Katie Bauer, Hayleigh Hall, Layla Hassler, Shea Dzurisin, Kesi Herstedt, Addie Matznick, Terridaun Merritt, Madeline Mosley, Jamie Orwig, Kiley Schenck, Paige Smith, Adrienne Snethen and Mirands Sorenson, all of Logan, plus Jessica Carlson and Kendra Cain, both of Malden.

Seventh-grade squad members are Emma Baker, Mia Bowen, Myrah Carlson, Davina Dabbs, Emily Irizarry, Kamilla Klingenberg, Brooklynn Matznick, Anna Robbins, Sophie Rutledge and Olivia Vergamini.

Logan/Malden opened with a split against Dimmick Saturday, winning its opener 12-0 in a shutout by Snethen, led offensively by Katie Bauer (3 hits, 3 RBIs), Vergamini (2 hits, 2 RBIs), Sorenson (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and Cain (2 hits, 3 runs).
