George Wood

SEATONVILLE — George Wood, 66, of Seatonville died at 4:20 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at St. Margaret Hospital in Spring Valley.

George was born Oct. 24, 1947, in Spring Valley to Edward and Alva Hansen Wood. He married Mary Jere Briddick on Aug. 8, 1970, in Seatonville.

George attended Ottville and Ladd grade schools, graduated from Hall High School in 1965 and then in 1966 got a diploma from the Northwestern School of Taxidermy. He has received state, national and world recognition with his taxidermy. He was an avid hunter and has several record-book animals, including a world record elk.

He was a member of Illinois and National Taxidermist Associations, the Pope, Young, Boone, Crockett Recordbook Hunting Club, the Seatonville Congregational Church (Independent) and the DePue V.F.W. He was a Vietnam War Army veteran, serving in the Medical Corps as an operating room tech. George was retired from UPS where he worked for 25 years.

George is survived by his wife, Mary Jere of Seatonville; two sons, Jeremy Wood of Dwight and Zachary Wood of Seatonville; his mother, Alva Wood of Ottville; two brothers, James (Dianne) Wood of Hastings, Texas, and Ray (Karen) Wood of rural LaMoille; a grandchild, Kayden of Dwight; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Seatonville Congregational Church (Independent) with the Rev. Bill Jacobsen officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley.
