I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend. There’s just a post-Labor Day feeling that makes you feel like summer is finished, even though the calendar says summer officially ends on Sept. 22. With the days already getting obviously shorter, I hope you’ll take this opportunity to embrace the rest of our summer days with enthusiasm and take the opportunity to relax a bit before fall, and ultimately winter, knock on our doors.

I am so happy and thrilled to announce our 2014 Women of Distinction winners. If you missed our story on Saturday where we made the announcement, the following ladies were nominated and ultimately selected to be our Women of Distinction Award winners for this year:

• Donna Barker of Wyanet.

• Michelle Brady of Peru.

• Pam Lange of Princeton.

• Mary Lanham of Sheffield.

• Eleanor Walker of Princeton.

• Carole Yandel of Wyanet.

This year’s winners were selected by a panel of judges made up of our Women of Distinction from 2013. They had several nominations to sort through, and while all the ladies nominated were outstanding examples of women who have gone the extra mile to make life better for others, they ultimately selected the aforementioned women to win this honor. If you see these ladies out and about, I hope you will join me in congratulating them. As for those who nominated someone who wasn’t selected this year, please remember them for next year. I know the judges had a difficult time trying to make their selections.

Please mark your calendars for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 16, which is when we will be hosting the Women of Distinction 2014 Awards luncheon at Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby. The event includes plenty of time for networking and conversation, a great luncheon and plenty of giveaways too.

Our keynote speaker again is Princeton’s own Kathy O’Malley, co-host of the ever-popular Kathy and Judy Show on WGN radio. Those who heard Kathy speak last year are still talking about the fun and inspirational chat she had with all the “girlfriends” (OK, there were some guyfriends, too) at the event. I know you are going to enjoy her.

Also, each 2014 Women of Distinction will have an opportunity to speak for a few minutes to talk about who they are and why they do what they do. You won’t want to miss it.

Tickets are on sale today, Tuesday, at the Bureau County Republican office. Please reserve your tickets now, since seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased by calling us at 815-875-4461, ext. 6320, or by stopping in our office at 800 Ace Road. Cash, check or credit cards are accepted. I hope to see you there. You won’t want to miss it.

Congratulations to the Princeton Tiger football team who snapped a 20-game losing streak on Saturday, after rescheduling from the Friday night weather. The sweet smell of victory is definitely in the air at Princeton High School.

Also, have you driven by the high school and seen the Tiger paw prints and other school spirit on the street? I love it. And if you haven’t had the opportunity to check out the school’s new bleachers, you’ll want to make sure you head on over to Bryant Field to take a closer look. They are awesome!

I’ve noticed lots of children on the streets as I head to work every morning. Please take a few extra minutes to look and look again, as excited children don’t always have the best judgment.

Homestead Festival is just a few days away. Not going to your class reunion? You should reconsider. A lot of time has passed since you walked the halls of education. You’ll be surprised how glad you are that you attended.

Happy September ... already! Have a great week! Relax. Breathe. Exhale. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
