Princeton High School brings the boys sectional tennis tournament right to its own backyard, having never hosted a postseason tournament before.
Longtime PHS coach Connie Lind is excited to bring the sectional home but not concerned with taking on a new adventure.
“PHS and our tennis team are excited to be hosting sectional. We have never hosted tennis before. This is my 19th year coaching varsity, so as the saying goes ‘This isn’t my first rodeo,’” she said. “Mr. (Jeff) Ohlson and I are working together to cover all of our bases.”
The Tigers welcome 10 teams, including neighbors St. Bede, Mendota and L-P, to compete for the right to advance to state with opening-round play scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Friday. The top four finalists in each division advance to state.
“With Princeton hosting, we are drawing all the ‘A’ schools to the west of us. Meaning we have 10 teams that are very talented,” Lind said. “Our varsity team has had a lot of success this season, so we are hoping for the best at sectionals.”
The Tigers have won every tournament they have been in this season with the exception of its own, losing out by one point to Streator.
At the same time PHS will be hosting sectional finals Saturday morning, graduation will be going on down the street at Bryant Field where Tigers Jake Farraher, Luke Schultz, Alex Schlesinger, Colby Robbins, Jacob Gibson, Kyle Kinnamon and PD McKeown will all be receiving their diplomas.
Lind said the Tigers “will deal with that if we are in that situation.”
