Malden Invite marks 62 years

MALDEN — One of Bureau County’s oldest traditions will take place when the 62nd annual Malden Invitational basketball tournament tips off this week at Malden Grade School.

Malden will welcome Ohio, Neponset and Princeton Christian Academy. Game times are 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The tradition includes naming of the All-Tournament Team as well as a cheerleading competition with a school squad winning a trophy and individual cheerleaders being selected to the All-American Cheerleading squad.

Malden will also have a chance to show off its newly-renovated gymnasium. The gym has a new floor with new basketball backboards and scoreboard. The gym has been painted and area teams’ pennants adorn the walls.

The tournament was founded in 1955 by longtime Malden teacher, coach and principal Floyd Groene, who passed away Jan. 8, 2016. He was honored at a special ceremony at the 50th anniversary in 2005.
