MANLIUS — Walnut Rotary Club President Mary Beach Carl has announced the formation of a Rotary Interact Club at the Bureau Valley South Junior High School.
“I am pleased to confirm that Rotary International has granted a charter to the Bureau Valley South Junior High Interact Club, effective Oct. 2, 2017,” Carl said. “Rotary Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of ‘Service Above Self’. The BVSJH Club is compromised of seventh- and eighth-grade students, looking to Make A Difference in their school and communities.”
Interact clubs organize at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Rotary club members mentor and guide Interactors as they carry out projects and develop leadership skills.
“This club, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Walnut, is already actively pursuing opportunities to be of service. In October, club members organized a schoolwide birthday party of one of their classmates. In November, the club has plans to help raise money for The Believe Foundation and to plant a tree on the grounds of the former Sheffield elementary school,” Carl went on to say.
“Interact empowers young people in our communities to take action, develop leadership skills, and gain a global perspective they might not otherwise have. This club, under the guidance of their Rotarian/faculty adviser, Julie Decker-Platz, is off to a great start. It is a pleasure to see an idea that the Rotary Club of Walnut has had for a some time, come to fruition in such an enthusiastic way.”
The Rotary Club of Walnut has long promoted opportunities for area youth to broaden their horizons. The club has sponsored exchange students, awarded scholarships to the World Affairs Seminar and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. The club is also an avid supporter of the BVHS FFA Chapter, BVHS Renaissance Club, Ohio and BV after-school programs, Blue Raider Foundation, BVHS Booster Club and the food pantry’s Summer Meal Program.
