Spring Valley firefighters improve city’s ISO rating

The Spring Valley Fire Department recently underwent a review with the Insurance Service Office (ISO) in order to survey and update the fire protection classification rating of the community. Our ISO rating improved from a Class 5 to a Class 4. This is based on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the highest achievable class.

ISO collects information about municipal fire suppression efforts in communities throughout the United States. Insurance companies often use a community’s ISO fire department score when they set premiums for homeowners and commercial policies. In return, this may result in lower premiums.

A city’s ISO fire rating is based on fire department operations (50 percent), the city’s water supply system (40 percent) and emergency dispatch communications (10 percent). This reflects the service and dedication of our fire department, public works department, which maintains and continues upgrades to our water system, and the emergency dispatch center working together to improve our score.

Cooperation with Spring Valley Fire Department is also important. Having enacted an automatic aid agreement, additional equipment and manpower from surrounding towns and villages are always available when assistance is needed.

We feel this is a very good accomplishment for a volunteer fire department and will work hard to maintain this rating. The support from our community is greatly appreciated. We couldn’t do this without your help. As the saying goes, “Helping us help you.”

Todd Bogatitus,

Spring Valley
