County plans forums on law enforcement center

Bureau County Board officials will be hosting several open forums during mid-February and March. Forums will address the total project costs for the proposed law enforcement center, which will include the county jail, sheriff’s office and BuEComm 911 Center.

The General Fund is the primary government fund that encompasses operations for all of Bureau County except the Bureau County Highway Department and the Bureau County Health Department.

There are several restricted revenue fund accounts in the amount of approximately $15 million. These restricted funds can only be spent on specific expenditures as dictated by state statute. Keeping a reserve of a six-month balance in operating funds ensures a better bond rating.

The recent purchase of the Bureau County Republican building has offered a unique opportunity to save the taxpayers approximately over $3 million in costs. From the Prairie View Nursing Home sale, it enabled the county to purchase the building, with contents, for $725,000. The $634,900 in the Jail Capital Project Fund will go toward payment for renovation of the Law Enforcement Center.

A social media forum is not the place to debate the many questions, concerns and misconceptions/misinformation regarding this issue. It is important to attend one of the upcoming forums to be educated by county board officials on this important issue.

Dale Anderson,

Tiskilwa
