Church Women United awards scholarships to area students

PRINCETON — Church Women United has announced the three recipients for the 2018 Shirley and Dale Espel Memorial Scholarship. They are Alaina Marquez, Haleigh Hall and Kaelyn Condon.

Marquez, a graduate of DePue High School, will attend Illinois Valley Community College in the field of nursing. Hall, a graduate of Princeton High School, will attend Illinois Central College in the field of paramedical nursing. Condon, a graduate of St. Bede Academy, will attend Illinois State University in the field of nursing.

One of the responsibilities of Church Women United is the The Closet resale shop in Princeton. Several years ago, Shirley Espel was president of Church Women United. She and her husband, Dale, worked countless hours at The Closet. When Shirley and Dale passed away, their children used memorial monies to start the scholarship and The Closet proceeds continue to support this scholarship each year.

The scholarship is awarded annually to high school seniors pursuing an area of service with consideration given to: leadership, community service, academic achievement and self-discipline.
