STERLING — The Whiteside County Genealogical Society will hold its annual cemetery walk on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. The first walk will start at 1:30 p.m., with another one to follow at 2 p.m.
This year, with the 200th birthday of the state of Illinois to be celebrated on Dec. 3, the group will portray and tell stories of the first settlers of Sterling, many of whom will be having their 200th birthdays about the same time as the state’s celebration. We will have portrayers telling the story of Hezekiah Brink, the first settler of Sterling, who was born the 21st of May 1809. Hezekiah arrived in 1831. He has many descendants who have visited Sterling many times.
A horse and buggy will be on the grounds for those who’d like to ride around the cemetery.
