SHERRARD — Whatever extra it costs to wash the uniforms of the St. Bede Bruins, it was worth it as the whites they wore didn’t stay that way for long during the battle on a rain-soaked Sherrard High School field, slogging out a 24-13 win over the Tigers Friday night.
Neither team made much progress in the first quarter until the Bruins went on a 96-yard drive, capped off by a 13-yard TD run by senior running back Austin Torri at 11:51 in the second quarter. The Tigers were quick to respond, however, with D’Angelo Moody scoring on an 89-yard kick return to tie the game, 7-7.
St. Bede marched back down the field 50 yards mostly with Bruin QB Kalle Williams putting the ball in the hands of Ben Bernabei. Bernabei returned the favor by clearing a path for Williams to scamper in the end zone for a 6-yard TD run to put the Bruins back out front, 14-7.
Whether it was the sloppy field or the stubborn St. Bede defense, Sherrard had a tough time even getting a first down until late in the second quarter when they got four of them on a 13 play, 69-yard drive ending with an 8-yard TD pass from Kyle Yeater to Sam Kissner at 1:10 left in the half. The Bruins, however, blocked the PAT attempt to give the a 14-13 advantage at halftime.
Neither team gained much ground in the third until Bernabei’s 4-yard TD run to extend the lead to 21-13.
St. Bede sophomore kicker Nick Pearse put some more icing on the cake with a 37-yard field goal with 2:36 left in the game to increase the Bruins’ lead to 24-13.
St. Bede (3-0, 1-0) will host Erie-Prophetstown next Friday while Sherrard (0-3, 0-1) will be visiting the Princeton Tigers.
