SPRING VALLEY — The 2018 Colmone Classic promises to attract a good draw with games of interest out of the gate at Hall High School Saturday.
The third game of the opening day will be a repeat of last year’s title game between Bureau Valley (5-1) and Rock Falls (5-0) at 6 p.m. Both teams are off to good starts once again. The Storm defeated their former coach, Brad Bickett, and Rockets 66-53 to take last year’s title.
The nightcap will then match rivals Hall (5-1) and St. Bede (0-6) at 7:30 p.m.
This year’s tournament will feature three undefeated teams — Rock Falls (5-0), Marquette (3-0) and Fieldcrest (2-0) — as well as three teams still looking for their first wins — Putnam County (0-4), Mendota (0-5) and St. Bede (0-6), as of Tuesday.
There are 12 teams in the field, divided into four pools.
Neighbors Hall, St. Bede and Mendota are all in the Red Pool.
Princeton (2-4) is in the Gray Pool which is a mix of the “P” schools, joined by Pontiac (2-5) and Plano (2-1).
Putnam County (0-4) will join Bureau Valley and Rock Falls in the Black Pool.
Fieldcrest, a 12-time Colmone champ, will be joined by Kewanee (1-5) and Marquette in the White Pool.
There will be a game in each pool Saturday with Kewanee facing Marquette tipping things off at 3 p.m. They will be followed by Princeton vs. Plano at 4:30 p.m., BV and Rock Falls at 6 p.m. and St. Bede vs. Hall at 7:30 p.m.
Games continue throughout the week, including a sophomore tournament, through Saturday, Dec. 16, 43 games in all.
