LIBERAL, Kan. — Russell G. Johnson, 88, a resident of Liberal, Kan., and formerly of Walnut, died on Tuesday morning, July 2, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kan.
Born on April 29, 1931, in Sublette, he was a son of Carl and Ella (Lindahl) Johnson. He was united in marriage to Dorothy McConkey on Dec. 19, 1953, in Las Vegas.
He was an oil field contractor from 1959 until his retirement in 1982. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had served during the Korean Conflict.
He and Dorothy were members of the former Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Liberal, Kan. Russell enjoyed playing golf and going to the horse races. He had a very strong work ethic which he shared strongly with his family.
Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of almost 66 years, Dorothy of Liberal, Kan.; a daughter, Cindy Baugh of Liberal, Kan.; his granddaughter, Ranae Baugh; his grandsons, James and Dayton Jackson, and Quinton Baugh; and a brother, Lloyd Johnson of Rock Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters, Laurie Hampton and Karen Johnson.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 5, at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at the funeral home with Pastor Brian Moore officiating. Interment will be in the Walnut Cemetery, with full military honors provided by Rock Falls American Legion Post 902.
