Brock Hanson and family didn’t have a summer vacation planned, but thanks to their daughter, Piper, they do now.

Piper was selected for the USSSA Great Lakes softball team, which will play in Florida beginning July 22. She was one of 26 girls selected from tryouts in Peoria in May, who will be divided into two teams in Florida.

“I never thought in a million years she’d get selected,” Brock Hanson said.

Piper plays for the Padres in the Princeton C League as well as the new Princeton Velocity travel team, which placed second in the recent 10U Iowa-Illinois state tournament. She pitches and plays second base and outfield.

“She really likes softball,” Brock Hanson said.

• Blazing a trail: The Bureau County Blaze 15U softball team has qualified for Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa, running Wednesday through Sunday. To qualify, the Blaze had to place in the top two in one USSSA tourney.

• Big Dogs: Braden Boyles, Noah Hoffman and Jacob Burns of Princeton and Brayden DeBates of Spring Valley took part in the Rockford Big Dogs’ championship run in the 16U Primetime Perfect Game Southside Showdown played around the Chicago area last week. The Big Dogs were undefeated, going 7-0 to finish first out of 30 teams
