My son has now been around for two decades, and my 7-year-old girl will be turning 25 in July. At least it seems like it. Her latest attempt at adding years to her looks is by wearing those fake glasses that have lenses that don’t do anything. They look pretty good on her, and she knows it; but I told her that it’s a slap in the face to all of us people who have to wear glasses to be able to see. She looked down over the nosepiece of her new spectacles and informed me that she really didn’t care.

Turning around into tomorrow

Turn around once, turn around twice, turn around three times, and tomorrow is here.

The perpetual student

It sounds cliché to say you are never too old to learn something new every day, but this is a philosophy I actually live by. I completed my formal education in 2005 when I finally graduated with my master’s degree in cultural anthropology. Yet, the student in me is alive and well and continues to seek out new information constantly.

From the edtior's desk

Aaahhh ... I opened the sliding glass door that leads to my backyard deck, and the smell of spring hit me. A gentle breeze brought the fragrant smell of lilacs into my home — the old lilac bush just a few feet away from the deck was in full bloom, sending me back quite a few years to life on my grandparents’ farm, where the sweet scent of lilacs permeated our world in the spring.

Wind power is vital

Leeco Steel has been an active supplier and supporter to the wind energy industry for more than six years. As the main supplier of plate steel to the wind industry in North America, we understand the industry itself is quite young in the United States. We have seen it evolve first hand into an integral component of a national energy policy. Leeco’s Steel’s involvement with wind energy has not been on the perimeter. We have rolled up our sleeves and educated ourselves on best practices; immersed ourselves in our customers’ business; and took action on national policy as a board member of the American Wind Energy Association.

Back to home rule

Five years ago Princeton experienced what many referred to as a hundred-year rain. A couple of weeks ago, another hundred-year rain occurred. I recall storms while growing up referred to as hundred-year rains. It’s inevitable that hundred-year rains are in our future, and so are flooding and sanitary back up issues.

When I grow up ...

I spend a lot of time with my mom. I tend to believe it is a highly developed sixth sense, recognized early on and carefully nurtured over the years. As a shaman attains an almost mythical tribal status through conversing with netherworld spirits, so have I elevated myself to unthinkable heights as a medium of idiocy, a clairvoyant of the moronic, a visionary of stooge like behavior.

The worst or best?

CareerCast.com recently published its 25th annual Jobs Rated Report, which ranks jobs based on work conditions, salary, stress level and hiring outlook. It is an economic theory that supports “supply side” economics. There are many opinions about the relationship between tax rates and government revenue as described by the Laffer curve. But the fact is, decreasing taxes also decreases tax revenue, and increased economic activity does not make up the difference.

Living in harmony

Music and me go way back.
