
Created: Thursday, March 1, 2007 12:00 a.m. CDT Updated: Tuesday, May 19, 2009 11:58 a.m. CDT Joseph PomeroyPRINCETON — Joseph William Pomeroy, 94, of Princeton died at 4:28 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton. Born Aug. 31, 1912, in Ohio to Oren and Jeanette (Anderson) Pomeroy, he married Phyllis Paden Sept. 4, 1937, in the Kasbeer Methodist Church. She survives. He worked at the creamery in Ohio and farmed from 1943 to 1989. He graduated from Ohio Grade School and Ohio High School in 1930. He was a Clover Leaf 4-H member for 30 years, was on the Princeton Elementary School Board for six years, Walnut High School Advisory Board, secretary and treasurer of Kiwanis and a Master Mason for more than 50 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as a board member, liturgist, president of the Wesleyan Class and a Sunday school teacher. He volunteered for Mobile Meals, the SHARE food program, Muscular Dystrophy Telethon and the Gold Coat program at Perry Memorial Hospital. He was the past president of AARP, helped with the Senior Health Insurance Program, picked up blood for area hospitals, volunteered at Freedom House, helped organize the Ohio Fire Department and took over presidency of WIAAA. He was voted into the Gallery of Ageless Achievers of WIAAA, chosen king of the Homestead Festival, received the 1995 Summit Award and the H.C. McCutchan Award in 2003. Also surviving are one daughter, Dixie (Paul) Utter of Eddyville, Ky.; two sons, Reid Pomeroy of Lakeland, Fla., and Robert L. (Patti) Pomeroy of Plano, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Roberta Pomeroy of Temple Terrace, Fla.; two sisters, Frances Husser of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Margaret Birkey of Wyanet; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David Pomeroy; one sister, Katheryn Lundgren; and one brother, Oren D. Pomeroy. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the First United Methodist Church, Princeton, with the Rev. James Galbreath officiating. Burial will be in the Ohio Cemetery, Ohio, Ill. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, in the Norberg Memorial Home, Princeton. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church. |
