Area teams springing into action

By Kevin Hieronymuskhieronymus@bcrnews.com

With the first official day of spring around the corner Wednesday, area spring sports are preparing to kick off the new season.

The Hall Red Devils’ baseball and softball teams will travel to LaMoille on Tuesday for their spring debuts. Tom Keegan returns as baseball coach while Pete Kasperski takes over the Lady Devils’ softball. The baseball game starts at 4 p.m. with the girls at 4:15 p.m.

John Bellino’s Bruins of St. Bede jump-start their season against arch rival LaSalle-Peru on Friday. The longtime Bruin coach is zeroing in on his 500th career win with a 497-270-3 record, since 1979.

The St. Bede softball team and both Princeton’s ballclubs will open Saturday. The baseball Tigers play at Ottawa Marquette starting at 10 a.m. while the softball squad stays home vs. Wethersfield/Annawan. St. Bede hosts Fieldcrest along with the baseball team; all dates are doubleheaders.

The LaMoille teams opened the season Thursday at Oregon with the Bureau Valley baseball and softball teams opening with a split against Wethersfield/Annawan.

Princeton’s girls soccer, defending sectional champion, opens at Washington on Thursday.

• College signing: St. Bede senior Jim Polster will sign a letter of intent to play baseball for Rockford College and coach Bob Koopman, formerly of IVCC.
