Baseball: LaSalle-Peru 11, St. Bede 1 (6 innings)By Brad Martinbmartin@bcrnews.comSPRING VALLEY — A day after a grand opening that showed pitching, defense, and a bit of hitting, the St. Bede Bruins got little of the same as they dropped a 11-1 decision in six innings Wednesday to their arch rivals from LaSalle-Peru. “I’m a little disappointed because our pitchers didn’t adjust, especially early on,” Bruins coach John Bellino said. “After that we made some errors that I think we can correct, and I’m not too upset about this other than we just need to be more ready in the field and our pitching. This is why I wanted to play this game to get the experience and build on it.” With the weather causing problems throughout the area, the game was moved to the Academy and the Bruins were the visiting team on the scoreboard. The Bruins then came to bat first and saw Jordan Jereb crush a shot to second base where Zack Terry make a spectacular catch to rob Jereb of a base hit. Two batters later Jimmy Polster also crushed a shot that looked as if it were going to get by Terry, but the soft hands and quick reflexes robbed the Bruins once again. “Boy I tell you that second baseman looked like Nellie Fox out there,” Bellino said laughing. “We put the bat on the ball a few times and give L-P credit they made the plays and we didn’t, but we’ll learn and get better.” L-P coach Bill Booker was also happy with the way his team took advantage of the opportunities given to his Cavaliers. “St. Bede has a nice team over there,” Booker said. “They gave us some extra outs and then Terry made some outstanding plays.” L-P went to work in the bottom of the first inning Terry started things out collecting a walk from Eric Safranski as did Arizona St. signee Brett Zawacki. Both Terry and Zawacki scored as Ty Potthoff dropped a fly ball in right field to gave L-P a 2-0 lead. Adam Woj then sent scored as Marty Zemanek booted the ball and allowed another L-P run to cross the plate. Another Zemanek booted ball and Pothhoff drop gave the Bruins a 5-0 lead after one inning of play. Then in the second inning the Cavaliers as Terry reached on an error and then Zawacki’s single to left scored Terry. Karch Kowalczyk’s sacrifice fly to score Zawacki for a commanding 7-0 lead. The Bruins finally cracked the scoring column in the fourth inning when Noah and Adam Emmerling got things started with walks. Mark Pyszka grounded out to the shortstop to score Noah Emmerling and cut the lead to 8-2. St. Bede could not muster anymore of a comeback and then in the sixth inning the Cavaliers added three more runs to end the contest 11-1. Adam Emmerling, Jordan Jereb, Luke Willand, and Zemanek had one hit a piece for the Bruins while Zawacki had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Cavaliers. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com. |
