Former BCR players of year still in the swingBy Kevin Hieronymuskhieronymus@bcrnews.comThree former BCR Players of the Year are still in the swing on the collegiate level. Two of them, Anna Coutts (Hall) of Ladd and Kristin Bickett (Princeton High School) of Malden, are teaming up for Monmouth College. Coutts is swinging a hot stick of late, with two hits in each game of Monday’s doubleheader at Beloit College in Janesville, Wis. Bickett, who has one homer among her seven hits, also had two hits in Monday’s nitecap. Coutts has started in 20 games and Bickett in 13 for the 5-16 Fighting Scots. Meanwhile, Princeton’s Dawn Nissen, a senior at Central College (Pella, Iowa) hit her first collegiate homer on April 9 vs. Augustana College, going 3-3 against the Vikings. The usual big hitter for the Dutch started the season off a little slow because of an MCL and meniscus injury to her right knee a few weeks before the beginning of the season. But Nissen told the BCR she is feeling really strong now. “Our strength and conditioning coach, as well as our training staff, have spent a lot of extra hours helping me get back to 100 percent,” she said. Track • Ladd’s John Thompson kicked in first place votes by winning the pole vault (14-5 1/4) to help the Augustana Vikings to a third-place showing in their Lee Calhoun Invitational Sunday in Rock Island. Augie plays host again for its Meet of Champions, held Friday for the women and Saturday for the men. Augie teammates include Alex Hartz, Paul Scoma and Laura Luloff of Princeton, Jake Taylor of Spring Valley and Wes Jackson of Mineral. They have also recently talked Princeton’s Angela Baumgart-ner, a freshman for the Augie volleyball team, to come out for track. She was a state medalist at Princeton. • LaMoille’s Michelle Schallhorn, a freshman at Western Illinois University saved her best personal bests for the April 14 18th Annual Lee Calhoun Memorial Track Meet in Macomb. She placed sixth in the hammer throw with a throw of 132-7, and ninth in the discus with a throw of 112-9. Volleyball • Former Bureau Valley standout Carly Payan, one of seven members of the Parkland Community College Cobras to sign to play Division I level next year, will play for Louisianna-LaFayette. The sophomore middle-hitter helped the Cobras post a 42-8 record. See more on Payan’s signing in an upcoming BCR. Tennis • Senior Greg Bouslog is 10-6 in singles for the Monmouth College Fighting Scots. He was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 5 singles over St. Ambrose, on Wednesday, and teamed with Alex Carter of Wilton, Iowa for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com. |
