PHS announces top 10 students for 2006-2007

PRINCETON — Princeton High School announced its top 10 students for the 2006-2007 school year.

Adam Hartz, Brooke Jensen, Katelyn Mansfield, Ali Marti, Sarah Rayfield, Andrew Schmeck and Jenna Zehr were named valedictorians of the class, while Ethan Smith was the salutatorian. Finishing out the top 10 were Debbie Hartsough and Emily Kauffman.

Hartz is the son of David and Anne Hartz of Princeton. During high school he was involved in football, basketball, track and field, Scholastic Bowl, National Honor Society and German Club. He was named a National Merit Scholarship finalist, Illinois State Scholar, National Society of High School Scholars, Notre Dame Scholar (University of Notre Dame) and CBS4 Best of Class, and received the USAA National Mathematics Award. He plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to major in electrical engineering and computer science.

Jensen is the daughter of Scott and Valerie Jensen of Tiskilwa. She has been involved in basketball, volleyball, Corporation Show Choir, Concert Choir and National Honor Society. She also plays the piano and is an accompanist. She was named an Illinois State Scholar, to the high honor roll, the News Tribune academic team, and the all-academic basketball and volleyball teams. She was a Notre Dame Club Princeton representative and received the Keith Schultz Memorial Award. She will attend Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky., playing on the girls’ basketball team.

Mansfield is the daughter of Don and Joyce Mansfield of Princeton. During high school she participated in basketball, Student Council, Concert Choir, Ladies Ensemble and the Star Spangled Singers. She was named to the high honor roll and received the Sportsmanship Award. She will attend Illinois Valley Community College for two years and then transfer to a four-year school to complete a major in English.

Marti is the daughter of Jill and Andy Marti of Princeton. During high school she was involved in cross country, track, yearbook, choir, band and small ensembles. She was named an Elks Teen of the Month and was a three-time cross country MVP. She received the Keith Schultz Memorial Award and was recognized for IHSA academic achievement. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was named to the News Tribune all-academic team. She will attend Truman State University, majoring in visual communications and minoring in advertising.

Rayfield is the daughter of Don and Susie Rayfield of Princeton. During high school she participated in Student Council, Lifesavers and the Principal’s Advisory Commit-tee. She was named a Student of the Month and received three Board of Education awards of merit. She will attend Bradley University, majoring in accounting.

Schmeck is the son of Martin Schmeck and Cindy Penzenik. During high school he participated in football, basketball, track, band, choir and Student Council. He was named all-conference in football and all-academic for football, basketball and track. He received the Award of Merit and was a member of the National Honor Society. He will major in Biblical studies at Trinity International University and continue into seminary.

Zehr is the daughter of Cal and Carol Zehr of Tiskilwa. During high school she took part in tennis, cheerleading, band, Big Brother/Big Sister, National Honor Society and Student Council. She was named the November Elks Teen of the Month and received an Academic Excellence Award. She was an Illinois State Scholar and had perfect attendance. She was NCIC all-academic for tennis, cheerleading and band. She also received sportsmanship awards for volleyball, tennis and cheerleading. She will attend Goshen College, majoring in elementary education.

Smith is the son of Tad and Diane Smith of Princeton. During high school he participated in football, basketball, baseball, track, Student Council and National Honor Society. He was named the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen and was the November Elks Teen of the Month. He received an Academic Excellence Award and had perfect attendance. He was a HOBY Ambassador and an Illinois State Scholar. He will attend Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, majoring in communications.

Hartsough is the daughter of Maria and Dan Hartsough of Princeton. During high school she was involved in Concert Choir, Student Council, Young Life, youth group, small ensembles and the spring musical. She was named an Illinois State Scholar and received various music awards. She was also named to the high school roll and was a member of the National Honor Society. She will attend the New Tribes Bible Institute, majoring in Bible and missions.

Kauffman is the daughter of George and Connie Kauffman of Tiskilwa. During high school she was involved in basketball, soccer and choir. She was recognized for academic achievement and was named an Illinois State Scholar. She will attend North Central College.
