SPRING VALLEY — Registration for children residing in the Spring Valley School District who will enter kindergarten through eighth grade this fall will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 at John F. Kennedy School.

Returning students and pre-registered kindergarten students are reminded to bring in the paperwork they were previously given. Students new to the district should bring a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate (hospital certificates are invalid). This may be obtained at the county clerk’s office in the county in which the child was born. Health and immunization records are required. Physicals should be dated after Jan. 1, 2007. Students not in medical compliance by the first day of school will be unable to attend classes and will be considered truant.

A physical clinic will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 at JFK school. Physicals are required for students entering kindergarten and fifth grade, and those students transferring from another state. The cost for physicals is $25. Dental exams are now required for students entering kindergarten, second and sixth grades. Call the office if you are interested in receiving information regarding a dental sealant clinic being offered by the health department in July and August. Physical and dental forms should be available at the doctor’s and dentist’s office or they may be obtained through the school offices. Custody papers should be provided, if applicable. Proof of residence and transfer forms from any previous school are also required.

The educational material fee is $75. Cost of kindergarten snack milk is $26.25 per semester, $52.50 per year. Bus fees are $35 per semester, $70 per year. Individual tickets may be purchased at 50 cents per ride. Bussing is free to students living more than one and one-half miles from the school they will attend or those who live in designated hazard zones. No waivers are available for bus fees.

All first- through eighth- grade students are required to purchase assignment notebooks or folders through their schools. They are available for $3. Students in grades 6 to 8 who participate in sports will have to pay a one-time yearly fee of $75. Students in grades 6-8 who participate in any organizations must pay a one-time yearly activity fee of $25. Yearbooks may be ordered with registration for $12. Waivers for education material fees and meals are available in the school offices. Those kindergarten students approved for free meals will receive free snack milk. There are no waivers for extra lunch milks, and no reduced milk fees for anyone. Fees will be waived only after completed applications have been submitted and approved. Only those students who have turned in a completed meal waiver will receive free meals. Any outstanding balances from the previous year should also be paid. Returning students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the mail-in registration through Aug. 1. Registration can also be done at the school offices through June 30. Students unable to register on or by Aug. 2 should call their school office to make arrangements.

The school offices will be closed on Aug. 3 for post-registration procedures. Class lists will be posted on Aug.13. No child will be placed in a classroom until all paperwork is in place and fees paid or waivers approved.

Kindergarten parent orientation will be Aug. 14. All students, and at least one parent or other adult, should attend one of three sessions. Sessions will be from 10 to 11 a.m., 4 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is requested that no siblings attend. Parents should bring in all marked supplies at this time. Parents do not attend the first day of school.

The first day of school for students will be Aug. 22. School will begin at 8:20 a.m. and will dismiss at 11:20 a.m. Bus service will begin Aug. 22. Refer to bus schedules for times. Students will receive handbooks, calendars, menus and information packets on the first day of school. Students should bring all supplies with them on the first day. Please note that book bags with wheels or extensions are prohibited. All book bags must be able to fold and fit in lockers. Book bags will only be used before and after school. Students who ordered School Kidz kits will receive them on the first day of school. These kits can no longer be ordered. Classes will dismiss at 1:50 p.m. until Labor Day. Times are listed for Lincoln School and times at JFK School are 10 minutes later. School meals will begin Aug. 23. Breakfast is available for 85 cents daily. The price for lunch is $1.85 and should be paid for weekly on the first day of each week. Extra meal items are available for 60 cents, and extra milks are 30 cents. Reduced meals are 40 cents for lunches and 30 cents for breakfast. Note that all meal prices have increased.

Parent orientation night for Lincoln School will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28. Parent orientation for JFK will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30.

Preschool screening for children who will be 3 and 4 by Sept. 1 will be held at Lincoln School from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 and from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24. To set up an appointment, call Lincoln School.
