The banned list
Area librarians would like people to celebrate “Banned Books Week” by reading a banned book. “Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read” is observed during the last week of September each year, and this year is being observed Sept. 29 through Oct. 6. The week has been observed since 1982, and is held to remind Americans not to take their democratic freedom for granted. According to the American Library Association, “Banned Books Week” celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them.
