Flores, Bees run down second straight MCC championship

Alex Flores and the St. Ambrose Bees captured their second straight Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Jones Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Alex Flores, a senior co-captain from Ladd, placed third with a time of 28:29, one of four Bees to chase down all-conference honors. The Fighting Bees took first place with 30 points with Grand View second at 43.

Volleyball

Bureau Valley grad Carly Payan is starting for the Ragin Cajuns of Division I University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She had a good match in front of mom and dad, with five kills, two aces, three blocks and nine digs in a close three-game loss against Western Kentucky last weekend.

The junior transfer from Parkland has started nine matches and played in 59 of 93 games for the Rajin Cajuns, averaging 0.86 kills per game.

• Angela Baum-gartner and the Augusta Vikings fell Oct. 19 to Carthage 3-0 in the battle for the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) volleyball championship. Baumgartner, a sophomore from Princeton had two kills in the match.

Four nights later, Augie clinched second place in the CCIW with a 3-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan in Blooming-ton. Baumgartner had nine kills and three blocks. The Vikings (17-11, 6-1) will host the first-round game of the CCIW Tournament on Tues-day against Millikin at 7 p.m.

• Freshman Jenna Luck of Spring Valley and the Lincoln College Lynx have won a school record 33 matches with one remaining in the regular season. Luck had six kills and two blocks in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Carl Sandburg.

Soccer

Four former Princeton Tiger teammates met up on the soccer pitch at Monmouth College when the host Fighting Scots took on Knox College on Sept. 29. Jeremy Doze and Bryan Jackson started for Monmouth with Jared Jaggers in the lineup for the visiting Prairie Fire. Trevor Rowley of Princeton is a freshman for Monmouth.

Monmouth (now 3-9-3) won 1-0.

Golf

Carrie Riordan helped Eastern Illinois take top honors in the rain-shortened F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate meet on Tuesday in Clarksville, Tenn. Riordan, a junior from Spring Valley, tied for third with a 75.

Football

The Augustana Vikings (3-4, 1-3) will return home Saturday after two tough losses for its Homecoming game with North Central, kicking off at 1 p.m. Former Bureau Valley teammates Preston Jones (LB) of Sheffield and Brad Monier (SS), of Walnut are in the lineup for the Vikings. Augie lost to Wheaton 28-24 and 33-28 at Carthage.

• Another former Storm star, Garrett Barnas, helped put the finishing touches on Harper College’s 28-7 win over Rock Valley in Saturday’s regular-season finale. He completed 19 of 40 passes for 138 yards, including TD passes of 3 and 6 yards. Harper (5-4, 4-4) will be the 3 seed in the Midwest Conference playoffs

The week before, Barnas returned from a bout of the flu to lead Harper Junior College to a 21-14 win at home over Ellsworth (Iowa). Barnas completed 18 of 33 passes for 280 yards, including the game-winning 5-yard TD pass, and was on the receiving end of a TD pass on a double-reverse option.

For the season, Barnas has thrown for 15 TDs and 1,840 yards since taking over in the Hawk’s season opener.

Basketball

Sheffield native Grey Giovanine and his Augustana Vikings have been ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III preseason poll. The Vikings have won the CCIW two straight times and three of the past four years.
