A deadly week in the nation's schools

The shootings were the latest in a week that saw school shootings in Ohio, Louisiana, Tennessee and California that left five dead.

In Portsmouth, Ohio, a female teacher was shot and stabbed in her fifth-grade classroom by her husband on Feb. 7. The woman survived, while the gunman later killed himself during a stand-off.

On Feb. 8, a woman at a school in Baton Rouge, La., shot dead two female students in a classroom before turning the gun on herself.

On Monday, a 17-year-old shot and critically wounded a classmate in a Memphis high school.

On Tuesday, a pupil at a school in Oxnard, Calif., was shot and killed by a fellow student.

The NIU shootings also come 10 months after 32 students and staff were shot down by a mentally disturbed student at Virginia Tech University in the deadliest massacre ever at a U.S. school.
